NOTE
The Sail was written when Mikhail Lermontov was only 17 years old in 1832.
This was the year when he was forced to leave Moscow and his university studies. Recorded in a letter sent by Maria Lopukhina,
whom he had sent the first version of the poem, upon his arrival in Saint Petersburg Lermontov
immediately produced this poem's outline while walking along the Gulf of Finland's shoreline.

Amid the blue haze of the ocean
A sail is passing, white and frail.
What do you seek in a far country?
What have you left at home, lone sail?
The billows play, the breezes whistle,
And rhythmically creaks the mast.
Alas, you seek no happy future,
Nor do you flee a happy past.
Below the mirrored azure brightens,
Above the golden rays increase —
But you, wild rover, pray for tempests,
As if in tempests there was peace!

U magli, moru plavetnom!
Sto li trazi, kamo ce doci?
Sto napusti u domu svom?
Valovi plesu, vjetar vije,
Jarbol pritisce i cvili…
Do srece nimalo mu nije,
Nit' ga sreca naprijed sili.
Svjetlo je pod njim u azuru,
Nad njim sunce zlatom blazi…
Nemirom drhti, moli buru,
Ko da u njoj mir svoj trazi!
